love is not against the law

Derek Webb came out with a new cd a little bit ago...it's awesome
You can actually download it for free if you want...
just go here - why would you not want to do this? Im not in love with Christian music, but Derek is one of the few that I am in love with

Here's a sample of what's been on repeat on my ipod for the last week...
Love is Not Against the Law

politics or love
can make you blind or make you see
make you a slave or make you free
but only one does it all

and it’s giving up your life
for the ones you hate the most
it’s giving them your gown
when they’ve taken your clothes

it’s learning to admit
when you’ve had a hand in setting them up
in knocking them down

(chorus)
love is not against the law
love is not against the law

(vs. 2)
are we defending life
when we just pick and choose
lives acceptable to lose
and which ones to defend

‘cause you cannot choose your friends
but you choose your enemies
and what if they were one
one and the same

could you find a way
to love them both the same
to give them your name

ps Annie...this is another reason why garage sale man's name was Derek - Im sure he was really deep too ;)

Actually, come to think of it, when did G-Dub outlaw anything? I thought that he was the Chief Executive... not a legislator.

It was in the same bill he wrote that outlaws happiness, puppy dogs, and the laughter of children.

    Damn that George W. Bush!

Derek Webb is one of my favorite musicians, and I love Mockingbird. The music is excellent, and the lyrics are very challenging. This is the first time that I've disagreed with anything of substance that Derek has said before.

However, this is one of the best lines of the whole album:

    "are we defending life
when we just pick and choose
    lives acceptable to lose
    and which ones to defend"

It seems so strange to me that the two ends of the political spectrum have opposite views of who to protect.

One side says protect civilians caught in the path of war and treat prisoners humanely, but tends to not care at all about unborn babies and the infirm.

The other side says screw the civilians and prisoners, just win the war, but screams about protecting babies and in the infirm.

It's strange that so few are consistent across the board - Christians should be passionate about fighting the War on Terror in a just and righteous way just as much as we are passionate about protecting the defenseless unborn and infirm.

That being said, I don't think that we've done all that badly in fighting the War on Terror. Isolated injustices and isolated individuals committing atrocities, but very little systemically wrong.

    Politics is strange.

Oh, yeah - I remember that bill.

It was the same one with the "kill the black people amendment", whereby he created Hurricane Katrina.

    Mike,

I'm glad someone else has heard about Bush's "hurricane creating machine." You'll notice Katrina didn't hit the oil companies. Conspiracy? You bet!
